Back to Business; Bulls take rematch game with Falcons
Hard, Austria
Tugg Speedman, the fictional character who stars in the fictional “Scorcher” film franchise in Tropic Thunder, would have felt right at home on Sunday. On a scorching hot afternoon in Hard, the Bulls finally got back on the field after three weeks off from action. On a perfect day for baseball, you could not have guessed that terrible June weather conditions had been keeping most of the Austrian baseball league from playing in the last month. The Bulls pitching and defense looked sharp from the beginning, rolling to a 23-6 win over the Ulm Falcons. After matching zero’s on the board for the first three innings, the Hard offense awoke with 8 runs in the 4th. They would tack on 4 more in the 5th, and 11 in the 6th to win by mercy rule.
“It was just great to get back on the field,” said head coach Sam “Faeder. “Its been tough not to play the last weeks, so we were just happy to be out there.” The game started as a pitchers duel between Christian Schertler and the Falcons’ Sailer. There was only 1 hit and 3 total base runners between the two teams in the first three innings. In the 4th inning, the Bulls bats woke up to the tune of 8 runs. Faeder got things started with a triple to centefield, coming around to score on a David “DAVE!” Grabher groundout. Some Falcons misplays on the field, including three passed balls and two wild pitches, were sandwiched around two walks and two hits to push the Bulls ahead.
In the 5th inning, however, the Falcons took advantage of a few walks to knock in some runs. Borko “style” Baranaskic came on in relief to get out of a bases loaded jam.
“Casey [Schertler] threw 4 great innings,” said Faeder. “Spotting his fastball very well. In the 5th I think the heat got to him a little. We’re not worried about it. Borks [Baranaskic] and our defense got us out of a tough spot when the game was close.”
The Bulls would make sure the game would not be close for long. The offense scored 4 more in the bottom half of the fifth before ending the contest due to mercy rule one inning later. The Bulls pounded out 12 hits in the last two innings, the final blow coming off the bat of Hubi “huba-zone” Bohler who ripped a bases loaded double to put the Falcons to rest. When asked about his hit, Bohler responded, “huh?”
On offense, Jules “F school” Egle had 3 hits and scored 4 runs for the Bulls, while Faeder added 3 hits, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs. Baranasic, Andre “easy, easy” Hane, and Robert “its the other team, so its not a fine” Buchele also added two hits each. “It was good to get back into things,” said Faeder. “I was happy with our defense, attacking the ball in the field. Hubi [Bohler] made a couple of nice plays at first. Big catch in leftfield for Dave [Grabher] early on too that helped us keep the momentum going.”
The Bulls play next Sunday, July 4th, at Ulm.
